Three Healthy Foods to Boost Your Mood

Most of us are aware of the angst soothing properties of chocolate, a tub ice cream or a glass of wine. All three will, at least temporarily, mildly numb and soothe difficult feelings to help boost your mood. If you’re anything like me, you might have wondered why all the ‘bad’ foods are so good at soothing tough emotions. You might also have wondered if there were any healthy foods that could work in a similar way. Turns out, there are. Instead of reaching for the tub of Häagen Dazs next time you find yourself in a funk, try one of the healthy foods below to boost your mood.

Why chocolate and ice cream improves your mood

These two comfort foods are made up of a little more than just fats and sugar. Along with being comfort foods that are (usually) linked to positive memories, these two favoured foods of people battling the blues have milk as one of the major ingredients. A, B6, B12, C, D, and E are found in ice cream and chocolate. Along with all this goodness, you’ll also find high amounts of L-tryptophan which works as a natural relaxant for our nervous system and can aid symptoms of insomnia.

Sadly, the L-tryptophan, B6, B12 and other vitamins come with a hefty dose of sugar and saturated fats. Not so great if you’re watching your health or weight. While chocolate and ice cream may cheer you…
