How you spend the final hours of your day influences your sleep, your stress levels, and your thoughts. Plenty has been written about morning routines for better days and increased productivity. But evening routines are just as important, if not more.

Switching off at the end of the day is like shutting down your computer properly. All the files get saved properly so there’s less fragmentation to deal with when you start up again in the morning.

As kids, the bedtime routines our parents insisted on helped us sleep, develop and grow. When we become adults, we tend to leave this behind. But we’re still developing, changing and growing. The less helpful evening habits we collect make that a little tougher. They can also lead to insomnia, broken sleep and other health issues. Not to mention less energy and ability to do the best we can the following day.

Sleep is a massive part of keeping healthy. I love sleep. I’m often amazed at all the cool things our minds and bodies do while we’re sleeping. But sleep isn’t the only aim of an evening routine. It should also help you let go of stress, show yourself some care, and give you a chance to process your day.
